Rhina P. Espaillat (B. 1932)

Rhina P. Espaillat was born in the Dominican Republic under the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. Her family was exiled to the United States and settled in New York City. She began writing poetry in Spanish and then in English and has published in both languages.

Espaillat has published 11 collections of poetry, including Lapsing to Grace (1992); Where Horizons Go (1998), winner of the 1998 T.S. Eliot Award; Rehearsing Absence (2001), Richard Wilbur Award Winner 2001; Playing in Stillness (2005); And a bilingual chapter book entitled World and Word / The World and the Word (2001).

Espaillat’s work has garnered many awards, including the Sparrow Sonnet Award, three Poetry Society of America awards, the Der-Hovanessian Translation Award and, for his Spanish translations by Robert Frost, the Tree at My Window award Robert Frost Foundation. She is a two-time winner of the Formalist’s Howard Nemerov Sonnet Award and received a 2008 Achievement of Life Award from Salem State College. She is a founding member of the Fresh Meadows Poets and a founding member and former director of the Powow River Poets. For more than a decade, he coordinated the Newburyport Art Association’s Annual Poetry Contest. On 1998 T.S. Eliot Prize for Where Horizons Go.
